Buff Weka on Mou Waho
The buff weka is one of the flightless birds of New Zealand. Before Europeans arrived, these birds had no predators and thus did not need wings. Ferrets, stoats and other animals brought to New Zealand by Europeans nearly caused these birds to become extinct. Today a number of them have been placed on the island of Mao Waho, where they are beyond the reach of such predators.
