Originally built between 1900 and 1906 in Hanoi to house the French Governor-General of Vietnam, the building was taken over by the Communist government after the French were ousted from Vietnam in 1954. While state visitors were received there, Ho Chi Minh refused to live in such a magnificent building and instead built a small traditional house for himself nearby.
